A native of Starkville, Mississippi, Dr. Mark A. Aiken earned his undergraduate degree at Mississippi State University, and then went on to complete his medical degree at the University of Mississippi, followed by a five-year orthopedic surgical residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Dr. Aiken went on to complete an AO/ASIF Fellowship in Hand Surgery and Trauma with Dr. Ueli Buchler at Inselspital in Bern, Switzerland, and he also spent time studying in Edinburg, Scotland, and New Castle, England.
Proven Expertise and a Team Approach. It is no coincidence that Dr. Mark Aiken, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in Trauma and Hand Surgery, has partnered with Watauga Orthopaedics, a multi-specialty orthopedic practice that features a wide range of onsite services, including complete diagnostic and MRI facilities, and on-site physical, occupational, and hand therapy. Many of Dr. Aiken’s satisfied patients report that they are thankful for both Dr. Aiken’s treatment, and for the personalized care they received from the physical and occupational therapists on staff, including certified hand therapist Michelle Lamb. Watauga Orthopaedics’ surgeons, physical therapists and physician assistants coordinate care and work together to get patients on the road to the recovery, and back to their active lifestyles, as quickly as possible.
Expert Sports Medicine and Trauma Care. Dr. Aiken brings his trauma and sports medicine expertise to Watauga Orthopaedics’ walk-in Orthopedic Urgent Care Clinic, a “clinic within a clinic” which treats orthopedic injuries like fractures, strains, and other urgent orthopedic needs. At Watauga Orthopedics’ Urgent Care, patients are seen by an orthopedic specialist and get the treatment they need quickly and efficiently, without the wait of an emergency room.
Specialized Care for Pediatric Orthopedic Injuries. Dr. Mark Aiken and our orthopedic doctors understand how to address the unique concerns of pediatric orthopedic injuries. This is especially important for children because they heal faster than adults. Why see an emergency room doctor or a generalist at a walk-in medical clinic, when you can see an orthopaedic specialist? Don’t take a chance that your orthopedic injury may heal the wrong way!
Innovative, Minimally Invasive Treatments. Watauga Orthopaedics is the only practice in Northeast Tennessee to offer platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy – one of the most innovative and minimally invasive treatments for sports injuries available today. PRP therapy uses your own blood cells to stimulate the natural healing process and decrease the pain associated with acute and chronic tendon and ligament injuries.
Dr. Aiken enjoys and supports medical mission work in the U.S. and abroad, and he is extremely committed to educating the next generation of medical providers. He serves as a preceptor for students and residents at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine, as well as the fourth-year orthopedic residents at the University of Mississippi. Dr. Aiken chaired AO resident courses in Arkansas and Colorado and OR personnel courses in the Tri-Cities, and served as faculty for numerous trauma courses in the US and abroad, teaching procedures and techniques for trauma care of the injured orthopedic patient.
Dr. Aiken serves as a consultant for sports-related injuries to many area teams, and has provided care for the top water skiers in the world as the sports medicine physician for the Masters Water Ski Tournament at Callaway Gardens, Georgia. He is also the team physician for the United States Ski Team.
