Born and raised in Nashville, Dr. Michael Wells remained local to earn his bachelor’s degree from Lipscomb University, where he played baseball for the Bisons. He received his medical degree from East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine. Following a five-year orthopaedic surgical residency at the University of Mississippi, he completed a one-year sports medicine fellowship at the Ohio Center of Orthopaedic Excellence in Columbus.
Dr. Wells joined Watauga Orthopaedics in July 2008. Board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, he has a special interest in reconstructive surgery of the shoulder and knee. He performs arthroscopic repair of rotator cuff and labrum injuries in the shoulder, as well as shoulder replacement and resurfacing procedures. In the knee, Dr. Wells does ligament reconstructions and meniscal repair, as well as knee replacements and cartilage work.
As a “jock-turned-doc,” Dr. Wells enjoys working with athletes of all levels, from weekend warriors to college and professional players. He takes care of athletes from Tusculum College, as well as Sullivan County schools.
Dr. Wells and his wife, Courtney, live in the Rock Springs area with their two children. He enjoys mountain and road biking, golf, college football, and hanging out with family.
